What Can Tho is really like

Can Tho is a working city, not a riverside village; since the 2025 merger it is the seat of a city-province of about 4.2 million people. The river is what makes it worth a night. The Ninh Kieu riverfront runs along the Hau with a pedestrian bridge built in 2016 and a night market that starts after about 16:00. From its wharves, small boats leave before dawn for Cai Rang, the floating market most visitors come for.

Be clear about Cai Rang before you go. Its culture was recognised as national intangible heritage in 2016, but roads, bridges and new riverbank embankments have taken much of its trade. Traders who once sold from boats now load trucks. A growing share of the boats you see carry visitors, not produce. Published counts of the trading boats disagree so widely that we do not repeat any of them. What remains is still a real wholesale market in the first hour and a half after dawn, with produce hung from tall poles to show what each boat sells, and it is noticeably thinner by 08:00.

Away from the market, the Binh Thuy ancient house, built in 1870 by the Duong family, shows how wealthy delta families lived, in a house that mixes European and Vietnamese architecture. It was used as a set for the 1992 film "L'Amant". Con Son islet, about 7 km from the centre, runs half-day farm visits through a local tourism cooperative.

How many nights

One night is the minimum, and the reason is the clock. Cai Rang trades most actively from about 06:00 to 07:30, and Can Tho is three to three and a half hours from Ho Chi Minh City. Without a night here you arrive after the market has thinned. With one night, you leave the hotel at 05:30 and are back by mid-morning.

Two nights add an afternoon. After a 05:30 start, most people want to rest, and the second night lets you do that and still see Binh Thuy without rushing. Our four-day package uses two nights here for exactly that reason. Three nights is more than most visitors need unless they plan to explore the surrounding countryside on their own.

When to come

JFMAMJJASONDCan Tho

Our judgement from Can Tho's climate normals: almost no rain from January to March; April is the hottest month; September is the wettest. Orchards are at their fullest from May to August.

The dry season, from December to April, is the easiest time for boats: little rain, clear mornings and the river at a calm level. January to March is the driest; April is the hottest, with mean daily highs near 34 °C. The rainy season runs from May to November, with September the wettest month. The boats run in the rain, and the Cai Rang boats on our packages have a roof.

October and November bring king tides; in recent years riverside streets in Can Tho have flooded at the highest tides. The weeks before Lunar New Year are lively and busy, and hotels cost more.

Getting there

By road, Can Tho is about 171 km from central Ho Chi Minh City. The route is expressway almost the whole way, crossing the Tien River on the My Thuan 2 bridge and finishing on the My Thuan–Can Tho expressway, opened in December 2023. Plan on three to three and a half hours by car.

Public buses run around the clock from Ho Chi Minh City and take about four hours; published one-way fares are roughly VND 170,000 to 260,000 depending on the operator and the seat. Can Tho airport, about 9 km from the centre, lists domestic routes; check the airlines for current flights. On our packages the car is included, so none of this is your problem, but it is useful if you arrive from elsewhere.

When to skip Can Tho

  • If you have only one day in total; Can Tho without a night misses the market and becomes six hours in a car
  • If you are hoping for a crowded market of trading boats; it is smaller now, and we would rather you knew
  • If you want rural quiet; Can Tho is a city, and the countryside starts beyond it
  • If your dates fall on the highest tides of October and November and you dislike wet streets

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

How early do we need to leave for Cai Rang?

Around 05:30 from a central hotel. The boat takes 30 to 40 minutes, and the market is busiest from about 06:00 to 07:30.

Is Cai Rang still a real market?

Yes, in the first hour and a half after dawn, though much smaller than it was. Later in the morning it is mostly visitor boats.

Can we fly into Can Tho?

Can Tho airport lists domestic routes. Our packages start in Ho Chi Minh City, but we can meet you in Can Tho and remove the first road leg from the quote.

Is it safe to walk the riverfront at night?

The Ninh Kieu riverfront is busy in the evening with local families and the night market. Take the usual care with bags and phones in crowds.
