The traveller

Who this package is for

This is the package for travellers who want the classic delta, the islets, the river city and the border country, without spending each day in a car. The total distance is longer than the three-day package, but no leg before the last day is longer than about two and a half hours, and each long leg is cut in two by a stop: Thoi Son islet on the way to Can Tho, Sa Dec on the way to Chau Doc.

The second night in Can Tho is the main difference. It gives you an afternoon with nothing booked after the early market, and it moves the Binh Thuy house into an unhurried slot. If you are choosing between the three-day and four-day packages, ask yourself whether you want an afternoon to rest. If the answer is yes, this one is worth the extra night.

Day by day

Day 1

Ho Chi Minh City to My Tho and Thoi Son islet, then Can Tho

Pick-up at 07:30. My Tho is about 71 km away, an hour and a half to two hours by expressway. The first stop is Vinh Trang pagoda, completed in 1850 on a two-hectare site, with a gate built in 1933 and a facade that mixes European and Asian forms. From the tourist wharf in My Tho a boat crosses the Tien River to Thoi Son islet. You switch to a small rowed sampan for the narrow canals under water-coconut palms, then walk through a honey farm, a coconut-candy workshop and a fruit garden, where a group usually plays southern folk music. It is a well-worn visitor circuit, and we say so; it is also the easiest way to see the islet canals in a morning.

Lunch on the islet is included. In the afternoon the car takes you about 108 km to Can Tho, two to two and a half hours. Evening free on the riverfront.

Day 2

Cai Rang, a workshop and an orchard; Binh Thuy house in the afternoon

Cai Rang before 07:30

The 05:30 boat from Ninh Kieu wharf reaches Cai Rang in 30 to 40 minutes. The market trades most actively until about 07:30; it is smaller than it was, but still the main working floating market around Can Tho. The boat goes on to a rice-noodle workshop and an orchard and brings you back around 10:00.

Lunch is included. After a rest at the hotel, the Binh Thuy ancient house, built in 1870 and, by hours published in 2023, open again from 14:00, is about 8 km away. The rest of the afternoon and the evening are free. This is the slack in the package, and it is there on purpose.

Day 3

Can Tho to Sa Dec flower village, then Chau Doc

After breakfast, about 52 km to Sa Dec, around an hour. At Tan Quy Dong flower village, potted plants are grown on raised trellises over canal water and tended from small boats; the village is busiest in the weeks before Lunar New Year, when the whole delta buys flowers. In Sa Dec town you pass the Huynh Thuy Le house, linked to Marguerite Duras's novel "L'Amant"; we visit if it is open on the day. Lunch, with Sa Dec's own version of hu tieu noodle soup on the menu, is included.

Then about 104 km to Chau Doc, two to two and a half hours. In the late afternoon you go up Sam Mountain by road, past the Ba Chua Xu temple and the Tay An pagoda of 1847, for the view over the plain at sunset. The cable car is optional and not included.

Day 4

Tra Su forest, then back to Ho Chi Minh City

Tra Su between 06:30 and 08:30

Out at 06:00 for Tra Su forest, about 20 km away, which opens at 06:30. A motorboat and then a rowed sampan take you through channels covered in duckweed under the melaleuca trees, where storks and egrets nest. From September to November the water is high and the forest at its fullest. We ask the hotel for an early or packed breakfast.

Checkout at about 09:30, then the long leg: about 235 km to Ho Chi Minh City, four and a half to five and a half hours with an included lunch on the way. Drop-off in the early evening in the city centre or at Tan Son Nhat for a late flight.

The same route at three hotel levels

Three nights, two towns. Because two of the three nights are in Can Tho, the hotel level weighs more on this package than on the shorter ones, and the second night is the one you will actually spend time in.

LevelCan Tho (2 nights)Chau Doc (1 night)
StandardCompact double or twin, private shower room, central Ninh Kieu; window may face a side streetPlain town-centre hotel near the market; rooms vary
SuperiorLarger, newer room near the riverfront; some with city or river viewsLarger room on or near the riverfront, some looking over the Hau River
DeluxeThe larger rooms in the city, river or garden view, pool on siteOne of the few riverside hotels with a pool, or a lodge on Sam Mountain

A common choice is Superior in Can Tho for the free afternoon and Standard in Chau Doc, where you arrive at dusk and leave at 06:00. Each night is a separate line on the quote, so a mix is easy to price. More on the hotel levels page.

Hotel names

We describe the three levels by the room and the location, not by hotel name or star rating. Your written quote names the hotel and room category for each night once we have checked availability for your dates.

Per person in USD, two sharing a double or twin room unless the row says otherwise. Quoted for your dates, party size, hotel level and boat type; every quote lists each line of the standard table with its own figure. Confirm before travel.

On four days the car and guide are the largest shared cost, so party size moves the per-person figure most. Next come the three hotel nights, then the boats: Thoi Son, Cai Rang and Tra Su can each be shared or private. The pricing page shows the published boat and entrance fees behind those lines. How to book explains the steps after the form.

  • Anyone who wants to skip the long final drive; day four has about five hours on the road
  • Visitors in the weeks before Lunar New Year who dislike crowds; Sa Dec is at its busiest then
  • Travellers who want a homestay or a boat night; this package uses hotels only

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Why two nights in Can Tho and only one in Chau Doc?

Can Tho has the early market, which needs a night before it, and a free afternoon after it. In Chau Doc the two things worth timing, Sam Mountain at sunset and Tra Su at opening, fit around one night.

Is Thoi Son islet worth it if we have seen other delta islets?

Probably not. If you have already done a My Tho day trip, the three-day package, which starts with An Binh islet instead, is the better fit.

Can we stay at a homestay on the islet instead of a hotel?

No. Our packages use hotels at the three levels described. Homestays are a different kind of trip.

What if the Huynh Thuy Le house is closed?

We pass it in Sa Dec and go in when it is open. If it is closed, nothing on your quote changes, because we do not charge for it in advance.
