The traveller

Who this package is for

This package is for travellers who have two days, not three, and want the one thing a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City cannot give them: the floating market at the hour it actually trades. Cai Rang is busiest between about 06:00 and 07:30 and thins out after 08:00. Can Tho is about 171 km from central Ho Chi Minh City, or three to three and a half hours by road. A same-day trip arrives mid-morning, when the wholesale boats have mostly gone. One night in Can Tho fixes that.

It is also the simplest way to see how the package system works. The route is fixed. You choose a hotel level, the number of rooms and whether the Cai Rang boat is shared or private. Your quote then lists every line of the standard inclusions table with its own figure, so you can see what each choice costs. If you later book a longer package, the Can Tho night inside it reads exactly the same.

Day by day

Day 1

Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho, Binh Thuy house in the afternoon

Your guide and driver collect you at your hotel in central Ho Chi Minh City at 07:30. The road south is expressway almost the whole way: the Ho Chi Minh City–Trung Luong section (62 km), Trung Luong–My Thuan (51.5 km), across the Tien River on the My Thuan 2 bridge, then the My Thuan–Can Tho expressway that opened in December 2023. Plan on three to three and a half hours with one rest stop; leaving the city is the slow part.

Lunch in Can Tho is included. In the afternoon the car takes you about 8 km to the Binh Thuy ancient house, built in 1870 by the Duong family and used as a set for the 1992 film "L'Amant". It reopens after the midday break at 14:00 (hours published in 2023; check locally); your ticket is included. Then to the hotel. The evening is yours: the Ninh Kieu riverfront and its pedestrian bridge are a walk from most central hotels, and the night market starts after about 16:00. Dinner is not included; your guide leaves you a short list of places to eat.

Day 2

Cai Rang at first light, workshop and orchard, back to the city

Cai Rang between 06:00 and 07:30

You leave the hotel at 05:30 with your guide and walk or drive the few minutes to the Ninh Kieu wharf. The boat takes 30 to 40 minutes to reach Cai Rang, about 6 km downstream on the Hau River. Wholesale boats hang a sample of what they sell from a tall pole, and smaller boats move between them selling coffee and noodle soup. Be ready for a smaller market than the photographs you may have seen: roads, bridges and trucks have taken much of the trade, and a growing share of the boats now carry visitors. It is still the main working floating market left near Can Tho, and at 06:30 it is worth the alarm clock.

On the way back the boat stops at a rice-noodle workshop, where rice sheets are steamed and dried on racks, and at an orchard reached by a canal. You are back at the wharf around 10:00, check out by noon, have lunch and drive back. Drop-off in central Ho Chi Minh City or at Tan Son Nhat airport is around 16:30 to 17:30, depending on traffic at the city edge. If you have a flight that evening, book one leaving after 20:00.

The same route at three hotel levels

Everything in the day-by-day stays the same whichever level you choose. The one night in Can Tho is the only line that changes. This is what the three levels mean in Can Tho.

LevelRoom in Can ThoLocationWhat you will notice
StandardCompact double or twin with air-conditioning and a private shower room; the window may face a side streetCentral Ninh Kieu, walking distance or a short taxi ride to the riverfrontFine for one night with a 05:30 start; little reason to stay in
SuperiorLarger room with newer fittings; upper floors may look over the city or the riverOn or close to the Ninh Kieu riverfrontEasiest for the evening walk and the early wharf
DeluxeThe larger rooms in the city, usually with a river or garden view and a pool on siteRiverside, sometimes a short car or boat ride from the centreWorth it if you arrive early enough to use the pool

On a one-night package the gap between Standard and Deluxe is one room-night, nothing more. For most people the deciding question is what time they will reach the hotel. The hotel levels page sets out each level town by town.

Hotel names

We describe the three levels by the room and the location, not by hotel name or star rating. Your written quote names the hotel and room category for each night once we have checked availability for your dates.

Three things move this price more than anything else: how many of you share the car and the guide, the hotel level, and whether the Cai Rang boat is private. A shared boat is priced per seat; a private boat is priced per boat and split between you. The pricing page explains each line, and how to book sets out the steps from the form to a confirmed booking.

Who this package is not for

  • Anyone who does not want a 05:30 start; the market is the reason for the night, and later departures miss it
  • Travellers who expect hundreds of boats; Cai Rang is smaller than its peak and partly a visitor market now
  • Anyone who dislikes long car days; there are six to seven hours of road in two days
  • Travellers who want a homestay night; this package uses hotels only, at the three levels described
  • Anyone who wants only one day; we do not sell single-day trips

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Why not do Cai Rang as a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City?

Because of the clock. The market is busiest from about 06:00 to 07:30, and Can Tho is three to three and a half hours from Ho Chi Minh City by road. A day trip reaches it after the wholesale boats have mostly left.

Is the Cai Rang boat shared or private?

Your choice, written on your quote. A shared boat is cheaper per person and runs to a set plan. A private boat leaves when your guide decides and stops where you ask.

Can we be dropped at the airport on day two?

Yes. Drop-off at Tan Son Nhat is around 16:30 to 17:30. Choose a flight that leaves after 20:00 to allow for traffic.

Do we wear life jackets on the boat?

Yes. Can Tho's transport department requires passengers at tourist piers to wear life jackets, and boats on our trips carry them.
