The traveller

Who this package is for

This package is for travellers who would rather end a delta trip on an island than in a car. Instead of driving back from Chau Doc, it carries on west to Ha Tien, a small town on the Gulf of Thailand, and crosses to Phu Quoc on the public fast boat. Ha Tien is about 40 km from the island across the water, and the crossing takes about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half. It is the shorter of the two fast-boat routes to Phu Quoc from the mainland.

The route has one weak point, and we would rather you know it now. The fast boats depend on the sea. Phu Quoc has a dry season from roughly December to March and a rainy season from April to November, and rough seas can disrupt the schedule. In the dry months the crossing is routine. Outside them, keep the flight home flexible, because the last two nights are the buffer if a boat does not run on day four.

Day by day

Day 1

Ho Chi Minh City to My Tho and Thoi Son islet, then Can Tho

Pick-up at 07:30 and about 71 km to My Tho, an hour and a half to two hours. A boat from the tourist wharf crosses to Thoi Son islet, where a rowed sampan takes you along canals under water-coconut palms, past honey and coconut-candy workshops and a fruit garden. It is a busy visitor circuit, and a good one for a first look at the islet canals. Lunch on the islet is included.

In the afternoon, about 108 km to Can Tho, two to two and a half hours. Evening free on the Ninh Kieu riverfront; dinner is not included.

Day 2

Cai Rang at dawn, then Chau Doc and Sam Mountain

The 05:30 boat from Ninh Kieu wharf reaches Cai Rang in 30 to 40 minutes, while the wholesale boats are still trading. The market is smaller and more visited than it used to be, but at this hour it still works as a market. You are back at about 08:30 for breakfast and checkout.

About 120 km to Chau Doc, two to two and a half hours, with lunch on the way. In the late afternoon you drive up Sam Mountain, about 284 m, past the Ba Chua Xu temple and the Tay An pagoda, for the sunset over the plain. The cable car is optional.

Day 3

Tra Su forest, then west to Ha Tien on the Gulf of Thailand

Out at 06:00 to reach Tra Su forest, about 20 km away, when it opens at 06:30. Motorboat and rowed sampan through the melaleuca channels, and a stretch on the bamboo walkway that runs through the forest.

After checkout the car takes the border road west, about 93 km to Ha Tien, two to two and a half hours, with lunch on the way. In the afternoon you visit the Binh San hillside, where the tomb of Mac Cuu lies among some sixty other tombs, ranked a national site in 1989, and end at the Dong Ho lagoon in the evening light. Overnight in Ha Tien; dinner is not included.

Day 4

Fast boat to Phu Quoc

Your guide takes you to the Ha Tien ferry terminal for the fast boat to Bai Vong port on Phu Quoc, about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half at sea. Departure times vary by operator and season; we fix the sailing when we buy the tickets and write it on your final itinerary. You need your passport to board. The guide's service ends at the terminal.

A driver meets you at Bai Vong and takes you to your hotel. The afternoon is free. There is no guide on Phu Quoc and no touring is included; the island days are for the beach or for whatever you book there.

Day 5

A free day on Phu Quoc

Nothing is booked. This is the buffer day of the package, and the reason we put two nights on the island: if the sea delays the crossing on day four, you still have a full day here. If you want a boat trip, a car for the day or a guide, ask at the quote stage and we add it as its own line with its own price.

Day 6

Transfer to Phu Quoc airport

Checkout and a private transfer to Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC), about 9 km south of the island's main town. Several Vietnamese airlines list flights to Ho Chi Minh City; check current schedules. The flight is not part of the package price; if you want us to book it, it appears on your quote as a separate line at the fare of the day.

The ferry, in published figures

The fast boats to Phu Quoc are public services run by private operators. Their fares and timetables are not ours, and they change. These are the figures published by third parties, with the dates we read them. Your ticket in this package is the economy seat on the Ha Tien route; a VIP seat is an upgrade on request.

The same route at three hotel levels

Five nights in four places. Can Tho and Phu Quoc have a wide choice at every level. Chau Doc and Ha Tien are small towns, and in Ha Tien the three levels are closer together than anywhere else on our routes.

Because the island nights weigh most, many travellers choose Standard or Superior in the delta and Deluxe on Phu Quoc. Each night is its own line, so a mix is simple. The hotel levels page describes each town in more detail.

Hotel names

We describe the three levels by the room and the location, not by hotel name or star rating. Your written quote names the hotel and room category for each night once we have checked availability for your dates.

Three days of car and guide, three boat trips, the ferry tickets, five hotel nights and two island transfers make up this package. Party size moves the car and guide lines; hotel level moves the five nights; the month moves Phu Quoc more than anywhere else, because the dry season is the island's busy season. The pricing page explains each line, and how to book covers passports for the ferry and timing for the flight home.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

What happens if the boat to Phu Quoc does not run?

Rough seas can disrupt the fast-boat schedule. If a crossing does not run on day four, we keep you in Ha Tien and move you to the next sailing; any extra night is priced at cost and agreed with you before it is booked. The second night on Phu Quoc is there partly as a buffer.

Why Ha Tien and not Rach Gia?

The Ha Tien crossing is shorter, about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half, against about two and a quarter hours or more from Rach Gia, and Ha Tien sits naturally after Chau Doc on the border road.

Is the flight home included?

No. Air fares change daily and many travellers fly on to Hanoi or abroad. If you want us to book it, it is a separate line on your quote at the fare of the day.

Do we need our passports on the ferry?

Yes. Passengers need ID to board, which for foreign visitors means a passport.
