What the two towns are really like

Most people pass through both towns without looking up, because they are on their way to Phu Quoc. That is a pity in Ha Tien and understandable in Rach Gia.

Rach Gia is a busy provincial town, listed as the administrative centre of the enlarged An Giang province. Its ferry terminal on Nguyen Cong Tru street had about 13 sailings a day to Phu Quoc in 2024 press reports, and it is the natural choice if you come from Can Tho, about 110 km away. The crossing is the longer one, a little over two hours and up to about two and three-quarter hours depending on the boat and the sea; the slowest boats take about three and a half.

Ha Tien is small and slower, close to the Cambodian border, with limestone hills, a lagoon and a waterfront where boats come and go all day. Its sights are modest but real: the Binh San hillside with the tomb of Mac Cuu among about sixty other tombs, ranked a national site in 1989; the Dong Ho lagoon of about 1,300 hectares, much of it open water ringed with mangroves; the Thach Dong grotto; and Mui Nai beach. The fast boat from Ha Tien to Phu Quoc, about 40 km away, takes about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half.

On our packagesThe six-day package, with a night hereNot used

Our six-day package uses Ha Tien. It follows on naturally from Chau Doc, the sea crossing is the shorter of the two, and the town is worth the night. If you were coming straight from Can Tho, Rach Gia would be closer by road but longer by sea.

Sources disagree, and fares rise and fall by season and operator, so read the table as a range: published fare, checked October 2026; confirm before booking. Operators include Superdong, Phu Quoc Express, Hoa Binh Seabus and Ngoc Thanh. Phu Quoc Express describes its boats as carrying up to 680 passengers with 18 business-class seats. Passengers need ID to board, so bring your passport, and allow 30 to 45 minutes at the terminal.

When the sea is kind

JFMAMJJASONDPhu Quoc crossing

Our judgement from Phu Quoc's climate: dry December to March; rainy April to November, wettest in August.

Phu Quoc has a dry season from roughly December to March and a rainy season from April to November, with August the wettest month at close to 500 mm of rain. Crossing times depend on the weather and the sea, and rough seas can disrupt the schedule. In the dry months the crossing is routine. In the wet months, plan a spare day before any flight; our six-day package keeps two nights on the island partly for that reason.

Getting there

Ha Tien is about 327 km from central Ho Chi Minh City by road, six to seven hours, which is why almost nobody drives straight there. On our route it comes at the end of a day from Chau Doc, about 93 km along the border road. Rach Gia is about 233 km from Ho Chi Minh City and about 110 km from Can Tho; Phuong Trang (FUTA) runs a scheduled bus from Ho Chi Minh City. Rach Gia's small airport is about 100 km from Ha Tien.

When to skip the sea crossing

  • If you are prone to seasickness and travelling between April and November
  • If you have a fixed flight from Phu Quoc on the day after the crossing
  • If you only want the island; flying from Ho Chi Minh City is quicker than driving the delta to reach the boat
  • If you would rather end the trip back in Ho Chi Minh City; the four-day package does that

Our package that uses Ha Tien

The six-day delta and Phu Quoc package spends its third night in Ha Tien and crosses on the morning of day four. The economy fast-boat ticket is an included line; a VIP seat is an upgrade. The route before Ha Tien runs through Can Tho and Chau Doc.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Which is quicker to Phu Quoc, Ha Tien or Rach Gia?

Ha Tien, at about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half at sea, against about two hours and ten minutes or more from Rach Gia.

Do we need to book the boat in advance?

On the six-day package we buy the tickets for you and fix the sailing on your final itinerary. Travelling independently, buying ahead is sensible in the dry season.

Can we take a car across?

There is a car ferry, slower at about three hours. Our package uses the fast passenger boat and a separate driver on the island.

Is Ha Tien worth a night on its own?

For a slow evening by the lagoon and a few modest sights, yes. It is not a place for several days unless you want quiet.
